1. Produced Water Technology

Definition: "Produced water" is water brought to the surface during oil or gas extraction, often containing hydrocarbons, salts, heavy metals, and radioactive materials.

Solution Types:

  • Electrocoagulation & Flotation

→ Removes emulsified oils and solids

→ Enables partial reuse or safer disposal

  • Membrane Filtration (UF/NF/RO)

→ Removes salts, hydrocarbons, and trace contaminants

→ Water can be reused for reinjection or irrigation (post-treatment)

  • Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)

→ Distillation/crystallization recovers water and minerals

→ Integration with waste heat or renewable energy improves sustainability

  • Energy Integration:

    • Treated water powers Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems

    • Use for crypto mining cooling loops or thermal energy recovery

2. Frac Water Technology

Definition: Water used in hydraulic fracturing (fracking), often mixed with sand and chemicals; post-use water contains complex contaminants.

Solution Types:

  • On-site Recycling Units

→ Filters and chemical treatments allow water to be reused for next fracking job

    → Reduces freshwater demand

  • Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP)

→ Destroys complex organics and bio-contaminants

→ Makes water usable for other industrial purposes

  • Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO)

→ Converts all organic compounds into clean gas and water

→ High potential for carbon-neutral operation

  • Energy Recovery Concept:

→ High-temperature water recovery processes could drive turbine generators or thermal crypto mining systems

3. Brine Water Technology

Definition: Brine is high-salinity wastewater from desalination, industrial processes, or oilfield activities.

Solution Types:

  • Brine Concentrators / Crystallizers

→ Extract fresh water, leave behind salts

→ Reduce volume of waste, recover minerals (e.g., lithium, magnesium)

  • Forward Osmosis (FO)

→ Uses osmotic pressure gradients to treat brine

→ Lower energy requirements compared to RO

  • Electrodialysis (ED & EDR)

→ Selectively removes ions from brine

    → Energy-efficient and modular

  • Zero Brine + Mineral Recovery

→ Extract valuable salts (NaCl, CaCl₂, Li) for resale

→ Can be paired with solar ponds or low-grade heat

  • Energy Integration:

    • Use waste heat from crypto mining to evaporate brine

    • Integrate with renewable-powered ZLD systems
